Great Britain take home 44 Paralympic Swimming Medals

Portishead Town Council Issue the following statement in support of the open air pool:- "The Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council with responsibility for the Portishead Open Air Pool has stated that it is not the Council’s intention to close the unique amenity. "

"The Pool be subjected to the scrutiny process that would thoroughly investigate the way the pool has operated over the past years and to examine potential to improve the way it is run in the future. "

Public March this Saturday 8th November starting at 11am from the Somerset Hall to the Open Air Pool, please feel free to wear swimming related Fancy Dress.

The march was a great success with hundreds of people turning out on a windy November day to show their support for the pool, many people wore swimwear or related costumes and we had excellent press coverage.

Cllr Nigel Ashton claims he didn't say it would cost £700,000 to bring the pool into a usable condition. The council have now said that Cllr Ashton only mentioned several hundred thousand and that this was actually an estimate of what it would cost to refurbish the pool and its buildings to modern standards.

The pool remains ready to open next year, the only repairs that are required is the replacement of some piping and the repair of a small leak, both of which have been outstanding for at least 2 years!

North Somerset Executive decide that the council will not re-open the pool, it is decided that if the Trust cannot open the pool then the council will demolish the pool.

Representatives of the Portishead Pool Community Trust meet with the North Somerset Director of Leisure and Director of Finance to discuss the Trusts proposals for re-opening the pool.

Representatives of the Portishead Pool Community Trust hold a site meeting inside the open air pool to assess the condition of the pool, buildings and equipment and are pleased to see that there are no serious problems stopping the pool from re-opening in 2009.
